Phil Vickery Glass

Biography

Although only at the start of what I hope will be a long career in glass I have exhibited widely around the UK and abroad. I have completed a degree in glass and photography at the University of Wolverhampton, and a post-grad in glass technology and techniques at professional development level at the International Glass Centre, Dudley. I was awarded with the Stuart Crystal Memorial Award for the best free blown piece and also two year’s scholarship at the Red House Glass Cone, whilst at the International Glass Centre. I then became the artist in residence at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design University to develop new work and to help with the development of the students at the University. I completed an MA in glass at the University of Sunderland to push my art theory and practise further still and a two year residency at the University, producing my work and teaching the students. Most recently I won a major award in the States, the Renwick Award for Distinction in Glass.

I am now a valued member within the glass group Cohesion, and have become the Managing Director for a charity studio called Creative Cohesion in the newly developing arts area in Sunderland, Sunnieside, to help local artists and underprivileged in the North-East.

My work involves representational concepts around the natural power behind thought, human nature, and how the subconscious is woven into this equation and relationship. My sculptures are tools of representational awareness. Human energy, thoughts, and the subconscious are a powerful focus within the individual, serving also to connect us as a species. The mind often becomes and acts in a segmented way where thought can appear segmented too. Each segment acts as a building block of thought, but when the sculpture is seen as a whole gives a holistic view of the mind and energy. Within my sculptures, colours and forms represents various emotional states of the mind and the subconscious. From the minute to the monumental these sculptures reflect the inner workings of the conscious, subconscious, and the flowing energy that can be considered thought. Information is power so this reasons that thought is energy. I strive to visualise this idea with my own form of symbolism and representation.
